Kobayashi Kokei and paintings of history and stories
The thirtieth-anniversary exhibition, Kobayashi Kokei: Depicting History and Stories, runs October 10–November 23, 2026. Early and middle-period works explore historical figures and narratives through the painter’s renewed treatment of classical subjects. The modern Japanese-painting collection display in main-building galleries three to five is included in the same admission. The collection display at the separate Nakahechi branch has its own venue and tariff; this is not a two-museum combination ticket.
Student admission and certificate-based reductions
During the exhibition, ordinary admission is ¥600 or ¥480 for groups of at least twenty. Students and visitors under eighteen enter free with student or age identification. Visitors aged 65 or over and eligible disability-certificate holders receive half-price admission on presenting proof; the specified accompanying carers qualify for free entry. November 14–15 are free for Kansai Culture Day. These arrangements differ from the ordinary ¥260 collection-exhibition tariff, so match the price to the exhibition period.
Gallery talks and the November 7 closure
Curatorial gallery talks are scheduled for 14:00 on October 17 and November 21. A lecture on Kokei’s life and art takes place in the seminar room at 14:00 on October 31. No reservation is required, but exhibition admission is payable. The main museum closes November 4 and also November 7 because a national tree-growing ceremony restricts access to Shinjo Park. The November 7 closure does not apply to the Nakahechi branch. Year-end closure is December 28–January 4, with additional changeover closures.
Bus access and free parking in the park
Hours are 10:00–17:00 with final entry at 16:30. Regular closures include Mondays, the day after public holidays and exhibition changeovers; a Monday holiday moves that closure to the next day. From Kii-Tanabe Station bay three, take a Shirahama-bound bus via Minami-Wakayama Medical Center for about thirteen minutes, then walk five minutes from Shinjo Byoin-mae or the medical-center stop. Driving from Nanki-Tanabe Interchange takes about thirteen minutes. Free Park No. 2 provides 49 spaces; park lots one and three offer alternatives.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
