The roadside-station parking area sits on the high road linking Koyasan and Ryujin. Stop for views of the Kii Mountains or leave the vehicle to visit the tower and nearby walking routes. Conditions differ from central Tanabe at lower elevation, so align the visit with the facilities’ operating season and the mountain road’s access rules.

Resting high on the Koya–Ryujin Skyline
The station lies around the middle of Route 371’s Koya–Ryujin Skyline. Parking accommodates fifty ordinary and four large vehicles, with accessible provision. Parking is free, and the car park and toilets are normally twenty-four-hour road-rest facilities. Winter road restrictions nevertheless prevent treating this as an unrestricted year-round driving destination. Published driving times are around ninety minutes toward Koyasan from Nanki-Tanabe Interchange, or thirty minutes from Ryujin Onsen.
The shop, tower and closed restaurant
Shop hours are 09:30–16:00 weekdays or 09:00–16:00 weekends and public holidays. The tower opens at the same time but ends at 15:50, with admission ¥300 from primary-school age. The thirty-three-metre tower overlooks the Kii Mountains and, in clear weather, the Kii Channel direction. The restaurant is currently closed. Plan around views, shopping and a toilet break rather than depending on a restaurant meal, allowing for both the tower’s earlier finishing time and the shop’s 16:00 closure.
December–March closure and winter access
Buildings close December 1 through the end of March. They ordinarily operate daily April–November, with possible temporary closures in severe weather. Winter Skyline restrictions close the road to all vehicles at night and motorcycles throughout the day. During permitted daytime travel, cars must use winter tyres and carry tyre chains. Normal parking hours and the times when the access road can be driven are separate matters. A camera near the summit does not show snow or ice along the entire road, so follow restrictions for the route travelled.
Starting walks toward Gomadanzan and Ryujindake
The car park is also a starting point for walking via Gomadanzan toward the 1,382-metre Ryujindake. The tourism association describes a roughly one-hour walking course from the car park. For a walk through the beech woods, allow time to return and drive onward along the mountain road. The parking area is also promoted for stargazing, but that does not permit driving in or out during winter night closures. Fit a daylight stop or walk to the season and applicable road conditions.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
