Galleries and a terrace overlooking Tochio
Built to mark the former city’s fortieth anniversary, the museum overlooks Tochio with the castle-site landscape beyond. Two exhibition rooms occupy the second floor, while the ground floor contains a gallery, library room and studio. Views from the upper terrace and an equestrian Kenshin sculpture in the forecourt accompany exhibitions of artists and culture connected with the area.
Sculpture and paintings borrowed from the closed Kikumori museum
The Kikumori Memorial Museum Exhibition: Modern Sculpture Rooted in the Region runs September 19–November 15, 2026. Works borrowed from the currently closed museum in Washima bring figurative sculpture by artists including Rodin and Kotaro Takamura, alongside paintings, to Tochio. Admission is ¥500 adults or ¥250 high-school/university students, free for junior-high age and under. Groups of twenty or more pay ¥400/¥200. Visitors presenting eligible disability certification and carers enter free.
Exhibition-specific prices and winter closures
Open 9:30–17:00, with ticket sales until 16:30 and cash payment. Monday holidays move the closure to the following day; Tuesdays also close in April–June and December–January. The museum closes December 28–January 3 and for exhibition changes. Temporary-show prices vary. The Nagaoka Children’s Works Exhibition is scheduled to make the whole museum free on December 2–27, 2026 and January 13–31, 2027.
The uphill approach, parking and lift
At 1-13 Uenohara-machi, buses from Nagaoka towards Tochio connect with a fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk from Chuo Koen stop, or a five-minute taxi ride from Tochio Shakomae. The drive is around forty minutes from Nagaoka Interchange or thirty from Nakanoshima-mitsuke/Nagaoka-kita Smart. There are around thirty car spaces and one priority bay by the building. A lift serves the upper galleries; one wheelchair and one stroller are available free.
Other stops to combine within Nagaoka
In Tochio, add a meal at Mamesen and a break at the R290 roadside station. Yomoyamakan is in the separate Yomogihira hot-spring area, requiring a further journey. Mamesen’s eating area ends at 15:00 and museum tickets at 16:30, allowing lunch before the exhibition.
