1. Combine museum displays with the archaeological site
Excavations at Uenohara uncovered a settlement centred on pit dwellings from about 10,600 years ago. After viewing the museum’s dioramas, continue to the preserved dwelling remains and reconstructed settlement to relate the displays to the landscape.
The strata observation building shows layers dating back about 29,000 years, while reconstructed dwellings and cooking facilities are outdoors. Including the woodland paths involves more walking than visiting the museum alone.
2. Free park areas and museum admission
Entry to the park is free. Admission to the museum’s permanent displays, theatre and special exhibitions is ¥320 for adults, ¥210 for high-school and university students, and ¥150 for elementary and junior-high students; preschool children enter free. Groups of at least 20 paying visitors receive rates of ¥250, ¥160 and ¥120 respectively. Exempt visitors do not count towards the group threshold. On Culture Day, November 3, 2026, exhibition admission is free for all visitors.
Holders of a physical, intellectual or mental disability certificate and one accompanying carer enter free. Kagoshima Prefecture residents aged 70 or older receive free admission with proof of age and address; resident elementary, junior-high and high-school pupils also enter free on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays with equivalent proof.
3. Exhibitions from autumn 2026
The 76th special exhibition, introducing recent archaeological discoveries in Kagoshima, runs from July 18 to November 8, 2026. It includes findings from three sites in Aira and Shibushi, extending the visit beyond Uenohara to archaeology elsewhere in the prefecture.
The 77th special exhibition commemorating 40 years since excavation began at Uenohara is scheduled for November 21, 2026–March 7, 2027. It will revisit the site’s excavations in light of recent research.
4. Activity reception and collecting finished work
The hands-on learning centre opens 09:00–16:30, with general reception until 16:00 and pottery reception until 15:30. Individuals apply at the centre; groups need advance arrangements. Charges and duration vary by activity, including pottery at ¥300, fire-making at ¥100 and white soapstone accessories at ¥250.
Pottery is left for drying and firing, then collected later or shipped with postage payable on delivery. Shipping also requires a ¥120 box charge per parcel. Fire-making cannot take place during rain, after rain or in strong winds; children in elementary grade 4 or below need an adult’s assistance.
5. Monday, New Year and maintenance closures
The museum opens 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. The park normally closes on Mondays, moving to the following day when Monday is a public holiday. Mondays within April 29–May 5, August 13–15 and January 2–3 are exceptions and are treated as opening days.
The park closes from December 30 to January 1. Additional maintenance closures are scheduled for December 22, 2026 and February 14, 2027. On January 1 only the car park opens, 06:00–17:00; the park facilities remain closed.
