A travelling town at two historic roads
Yagi Fudanotsuji marks the meeting of the north–south Shimotsumichi and east–west Yokooji roads. Travellers bound for Ise and Omine supported a town of inns and shops. The East Hirata House operated as Kiharaya and appears as Yagi Kiharaya Kaemon in an Ise route guide compiled by Osaka’s Naniwa-ko. Together with the West Hirata House across the street, it illustrates the relationship between roads and settlement. The visitor facility described here occupies the eastern former inn.
The surviving inn and an old illustrated view
The building is thought to date from the late eighteenth century or first half of the nineteenth century. An illustrated guide of 1853 depicts both Hirata houses and a hexagonal well, helping relate the surviving structure to the earlier streetscape. The ground floor follows a six-room arrangement in two rows, with an earthen passage to the south. A broad eastern staircase and street-facing upper-storey balustrades suggest how the inn was used. Former guest rooms and long cedar beams upstairs draw attention to both occupation and structure, adding depth to a view of the facade.
A historic house opened for local exploration
The city-designated East Hirata House opened as Yagi Fudanotsuji Exchange House on July 14, 2012. Free building visits make it a base for discovering Yagi and the old routes. Upper-storey rooms also have a rental arrangement separate from ordinary sightseeing. Comparing former lodging rooms, street-facing openings, the garden and associated spaces reveals the building’s domestic and commercial roles. Locating an inn named in an old travel guide gives a tangible point of departure for exploring the streets around the junction.
Opening days and weather-warning closures
Open 9:00–17:00, entry until 16:30; a Monday holiday shifts closure to the following day. December 25–January 5 is closed. Heavy-rain, flood or storm warnings for Kashihara at 7:00 or issued before 10:00 close the morning session. A warning continuing at 10:00 also closes the afternoon; clearance by 10:00 allows afternoon opening. A new warning from 10:00 onwards closes the rest of that day, even if later lifted. Yamato-Yagi south exit is seven minutes away on foot and JR Unebi five minutes, providing easy approaches to the historic junction.
