Chinchoan Hongu serves sweets and meals beside the approach to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Choose a short break with Moude-mochi and matcha or a lunch combining noodles and mehari sushi. Its position offers a place to pause after descending the shrine steps without travelling elsewhere for food.

Moude-mochi coated in brown-rice flour
Kumano Moude-mochi wraps smooth bean paste in rice cake coated with brown-rice flour. Glutinous rice is steamed and pounded early on the selling day before filling, coating and branding the cakes. Named with a wish for the well-being of Kumano pilgrims, it is sold here in Zuihoden in front of the shrine. Souvenir wrappers use different designs at the Hongu, Hayatama and Nachi selling points. The sweet combines the soft rice cake, bean filling and aroma of brown-rice flour.
A matcha break or chestnut zenzai
Moude-mochi with matcha costs ¥500 including tax, pairing cakes made that morning with matcha selected from Uji in Kyoto. Chestnut zenzai at ¥770 is another option, combining the confectioner’s sweet bean preparation with chestnuts. Choose rice cake and tea for a shorter pause, or sit over a bowl of zenzai for a different sweet break. Because the tea room stands beside the approach, either choice can fit before worship or after returning from the shrine during time in Hongu.
Buckwheat soba and Kumano mehari sushi
Moude soba costs ¥880 including tax, combining all-buckwheat noodles with shredded daikon, plum and a light yuzu aroma. Wakame udon is also ¥880, with seaweed, chopped spring onion and yuzu. Mehari sushi with clear soup costs ¥770. This regional dish wraps rice in lightly pickled mustard leaves; the shop mixes ingredients such as bonito into its rice. Noodles and regional rice dishes make the tea room an option for a meal as well as a sweet stop during a shrine visit.
Visiting beside the approach between nine and four
The Hongu branch opens 09:00–16:00 and closes Wednesdays. Its address is Zuihoden, 195-3 Hongu, directly in front of Kumano Hongu Taisha, away from the Shingu head shop and Nachisan branch. Moude-mochi purchases and tea-room meals are available at the same location. A morning shrine visit followed by a break, or lunch before further exploration, both fit these hours. When leaving by bus toward the surrounding mountains, fit the meal around the next departure from Hongu.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
