Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the three grand shrines of Kumano and a longstanding pilgrimage destination. Its cedar-lined stairway, present shrine buildings and former river-side site at Oyunohara reveal the different places linked by pilgrimage. Visiting the shrine and seeing the treasury require attention to different days and opening hours.

Up the steps to the four main sanctuaries
A cedar-lined approach climbs 158 steps to the sanctuaries. Shrine etiquette calls for a bow before the torii, ascending on the right and descending on the left rather than using the centre. Visit Haraedo-no-Okami partway up and purify at the water basin before the upper shrines. The worship order is the third, second, first and fourth sanctuaries, then Manzansha, with two bows, two claps and a final bow. Wheelchair visitors can ask the shrine office for the separate approach instead of using the stairs.
Oyunohara, the site before the great flood
The present site received the four upper shrines after the destructive flood of 1889. At the former site, Oyunohara, stone shrines now enshrine deities associated with the lost buildings. Walk about ten minutes from the main shrine, crossing the main road and passing Ubutasha on the way. The broad setting and great torii differ from the wooded present grounds. A visit limited to the stairs and sanctuaries therefore covers a different distance from an outing that continues to the former site.
Weekend treasury visits and historical objects
The treasury opens Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 09:00–16:00, closing for lunch 12:00–13:30. Admission is adult ¥300 or child ¥100, with group reductions available. Objects that survived fires and floods are preserved here, including an Edo-period depiction of the former Oyunohara shrine complex. The treasury ordinarily remains closed on weekdays even when shrine visiting is possible. To add indoor viewing, plan around its opening days and lunch break separately from the shrine’s 08:00–17:00 hours.
Getting to Hongu and visiting conditions
Buses take roughly two hours from Kii-Tanabe Station or one hour from Shingu. By car, Kamitonda Interchange is about 65 kilometres and seventy-five minutes away via routes including 311 and 168. Free parking is available by Zuihoden, the World Heritage Kumano Hongu Heritage Center and the Kumano River. Pets may accompany visitors only when carried with consideration for others. The nearby heritage center provides local and walking information, supporting an onward visit to Hongu’s hot springs or restaurants after the shrine.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
