Around thirty handmade farm-style dishes
The cooking centres on local ingredients, light seasoning, stock, vegetables and home-style preparation. Produce comes from Garten’s fields, surrounding farms and places such as Kitera farm shop. Around thirty dishes span simmered foods, salads, fish and meat, rice and sweets. Menus change daily and seasonally rather than promising the same selection on every visit. Take small portions of contrasting textures and flavours, then return for more during the lunch buffet.
Local rice porridge and seasonal vegetables
Examples include simmered dried daikon or koya tofu, fried aubergine in stock, plum-and-shiso rice, bamboo-shoot rice, marinated fish and regional tea rice porridge. Tanabe chanpon combines fried udon and yakisoba noodles. Fruit and sweets such as coffee jelly also appear in the changing selection. Regular buffet prices are ¥1,400 for junior-high pupils and older, ¥800 for primary pupils and ¥500 for preschoolers aged three and over. The selection includes fish, meat, rice and noodles as well as vegetable dishes.
Regular seating and a separately reserved classroom
Regular buffet seats are not reservable and can be used by a single diner. Lunch is 11:30–14:00 weekdays or 11:00–14:00 weekends and holidays, with entry by 13:30. Groups can reserve a former classroom for the same buffet menu at ¥1,500 per person, with payment for at least twenty-five. A smaller actual party can use the room by paying for twenty-five. Group arrivals must be between 11:00 and 13:00; this booking and pricing arrangement is separate from ordinary restaurant seating.
The wooden school setting and reaching Kamiakizu
The grounds include an activity building in the former Kamiakizu Primary School, with a courtyard and rural scenery around the restaurant. Courtyard dining is an option in good weather. The restaurant operates except over New Year. Nanki-Tanabe is the nearest interchange; rail visitors can take a scheduled bus from Kii-Tanabe Station toward Kamiakizu, the nearest stop. Combine lunch with time around the local produce and citrus-growing setting on a journey between central Tanabe and the surrounding hills.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
