The building’s history from police station to cafe
The symmetrical white building uses mortar on its central timber structure to create a stone-like appearance. Built in 1949 as Tanabe’s police station, it subsequently housed the library, education-related offices and a community centre. Restoration preserved features including exterior walls, windows, doors, entrance counter and zelkova columns. The restaurant operates as a Type A supported-employment workplace, where bread and meals are made. A meal or coffee offers time to appreciate the building’s design.
Pasta lunches and a Wednesday-only set
Lunch runs 11:00–14:30. The ¥1,320 set includes pasta, either a small salad or soup, bread and a drink; a ¥1,500 version includes both salad and soup. A Wednesday-only ladies’ set combines pasta, a drink and a choice of dessert for ¥1,320. Pasta features seasonal vegetables and ingredients from the surrounding area, with a ¥150 supplement for some options such as certain cream sauces. Choose among regular and seasonal preparations for a lunch served with the bakery’s bread.
Morning bread and afternoon cake
Bread made with domestic wheat includes batard, shio-koji and kefir-yogurt loaves, and savoury filled breads. From 09:00 until sold out, the ¥800 eat-in set offers two choices from the counter’s bread or chiffon cake with a small salad and a drink. Cake-and-drink sets cost ¥650, with options such as chiffon, chocolate cake or cheese terrine. A separate blended coffee is ¥450 or tea ¥400. These choices suit a shorter break as well as the fuller pasta lunch.
Tuesday and Friday closures and rear parking
The restaurant opens 09:00–17:00, last orders 16:30, and closes Tuesdays and Fridays. Pasta lunch service ends at 14:30, so distinguish lunch from later cafe use. Telephone reservations are accepted. Five parking spaces sit behind the building, including two reserved for kei cars. The address is 2-6-7 Kamiyashiki. Combine a visit with exploring central Tanabe, including the area around the Minakata Kumagusu Archives, choosing the time according to breakfast-style bread, lunch or afternoon cake.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
