The Minakata Kumagusu Archives preserve the naturalist and folklorist’s materials and introduce his research. His later-life residence survives next door, allowing a visit to proceed from exhibitions about the man to the garden and study associated with his work. This is the central-Tanabe institution, separate from the Minakata Kumagusu Museum in Shirahama.

Research displays and the reading area
Kumagusu settled in Tanabe in 1904 and spent the last thirty-seven years of his life in the area. The archives preserve and study books, diaries, letters and specimens. The public reading area provides related books, photographic reproductions from microfilm of diaries and London notes, and terminals for digitised material. Original documents are not available for unrestricted public handling; consulting them requires advance procedures. Ordinary visitors can explore his work through the exhibitions and publicly available reproductions and books.
The garden, study and residence admission
From 1916 Kumagusu lived in the residence, using its garden plants and slime moulds as subjects for study. The house, study, book store and tree-filled grounds were restored in connection with construction of the archives in 2006. Ordinary archives displays are free; the residence costs ¥350, with high-school pupils and younger admitted free. Groups of twenty or more and eligible disability-certificate holders pay ¥200 for the residence; specified accompanying carers also qualify for the ¥200 rate. Choose the free display alone or add the adjoining paid site.
Diary panels beginning October 17
A free twentieth-anniversary revival display, Kumagusu’s Life Read through His Diaries, runs October 17–November 8, 2026. Panels explore the weather, family and social encounters, biological observations and writing recorded in his diaries. Original materials are not exhibited in this event. Reading the panels before visiting the residence provides context for how daily life and research shared the same setting. Free admission to this diary display does not remove the separate charge for the residence.
Fiscal-year Tuesday opening and arrival in town
Open 10:00–17:00, last admission 16:30. Closures are Mondays, the specified day after holidays, and December 28–January 4. In fiscal 2026, Tuesdays open instead of the usual second/fourth-Tuesday closures, except when Tuesday follows a holiday. Post-holiday closures do not apply when the following day is a weekend or holiday. The address is 36 Nakayashiki-machi, about five minutes by car from Nanki-Tanabe Interchange. Parking includes two accessible spaces, with no large vehicles. Allow for final admission when combining the visit with a town walk.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
