Nariaki’s garden and its shaded and open landscapes
In 1842, Mito’s ninth lord Tokugawa Nariaki opened the garden as a place to enjoy with his people. It complemented the study and martial training at Kodokan with rest and recreation. Walk from the front gate through bamboo and cedar shade towards the open Miharashi square to experience the changing atmosphere. Around one hundred varieties and three thousand plum trees grow here.
Kobuntei and autumn in Momiji Valley
Kobuntei inside the garden charges separately: autumn/winter hours are 9:00–16:30, last entry 16:15, with admission ¥230 adults/¥120 children. Nearby Momiji Valley has about 170 maples. Lighting is planned for November 7–29, 2026, from sunset to 21:00, subject to changes in autumn colour. Sakurayama No.1 and Momiji Valley parking are the closest approaches.
Seasonal fees and garden entrances
Normal main-garden admission is ¥320 adults/¥160 schoolchildren, rising to ¥500/¥250 during the plum festival. Age seventy and over pays half. Outside that festival, entry before 9:00 is free for everyone, and Ibaraki residents enter free with original proof of address. The south gate opens only during the plum festival; Togyokusen is otherwise exit-only.
Trial pet admission and reaching the entrance
During the trial, small dogs and cats up to 12 kg must fit entirely inside a cart or carrier. Complete procedures before visiting at the park centre, 1-1251 Migawa, then enter through the front gate. Dogs need proof of rabies vaccination within one year. Autumn/winter pet hours are 9:00–16:30; Kobuntei and Miharashitei exclude pets. Gate staff cannot process same-day applications. Buses take about twenty minutes from Mito Station; the usual route towards the east gate from the lower lot is about five minutes via stairs or eight via the slope.
East Gate works are scheduled to move admission to the gate north of the East Gate toilets from November 6, 2026. Work is planned through February 2027, subject to progress. The notice body describes the switch as around November, so follow the entrance directions on arrival.
Other stops to combine within Mito
Around Kairakuen, the history museum and Lake Senba, combine garden visits with lakeside meals. Hotel and restaurant parking serves a different purpose from general public parking, so choose a parking place for each destination. When continuing to station-side dining, coordinate hotel arrival, food last orders and parking charges across the day.
