ちちぶ銘仙館は、織物の町として発展した秩父で、糸を整え、染め、織る仕事を紹介する施設です。展示を眺める見学に加え、予約すれば自分の手で布や小物を作る体験もできます。建物自体も昭和初期の工業試験場を受け継ぎ、織機のある空間と産業の歴史を一緒に見られます。

旧試験場で糸から布への工程を見る
建物は1930年に造られた旧埼玉県秩父工業試験場で、2001年に国の登録有形文化財となりました。のこぎり屋根の工場部分や本館に、糸を巻く道具、整経、捺染、機織りの工程を伝える展示が置かれています。秩父銘仙のほぐし捺染は、織り上がった布ではなくタテ糸へ模様を付ける技法。工程を順に見ると、独特の色柄が布になる仕組みを理解できます。
小物作りから本格的な捺染まで
手織りのコースターは1,500円、所要30分からで一度に5名まで。藍染ハンカチ、型染めのトートバッグや巾着はそれぞれ1,500円、目安一時間です。タテ糸に模様を付けるほぐし捺染は一名、一時間、10,000円で、一色増すごとに1,000円加算。見学の入館料とは別に体験料金が必要です。工房利用は予約制で、一週間前までに予約します。
秋の催しと見学だけの利用
2026年10月24・25日は秋の銘仙館まつりが開かれ、受講者や修了者の作品展示、糸取り・捺染・機織りの実演、着物の虫干しなどを予定しています。普段の入館料は大人210円、小中学生100円、25名以上は150円・50円。対象の障害者手帳などの所持者と介護者1名は無料です。展示だけを見る日と、時間を確保して作る日を選べます。
十六時閉館と体験受付を使い分ける
開館は9～16時、年末年始12月29日～1月3日は休館です。体験受付は9～11時30分と13～15時で、昼の時間帯は分かれています。西武秩父駅から徒歩5分、御花畑駅から徒歩10分。駐車場は一般20台と障がい者用1台があり、西側入口にはスロープがあります。展示、予約体験、街での食事を組み合わせるときは、閉館時刻と体験の所要時間を基準にできます。
秩父市内で組み合わせる訪問先
市街の見学、吉田・荒川の立ち寄り、大滝や三峰の山道では移動に必要な時間が異なります。食事の注文締切と宿への到着時間を合わせ、関連する施設へ車や鉄道で続く行程を組めます。駐車場はそれぞれの施設・地域での利用条件に合わせて選べます。
Chichibu Meisenkan explains the preparation, dyeing and weaving of silk in a city shaped by textile production. Ordinary exhibition visits can be combined with a reserved workshop to make a small textile item. The building itself survives from an early-Showa industrial testing station, allowing the machinery and workspaces to be considered alongside the development of the local industry.

Follow the process from yarn to cloth
Built in 1930 as the Saitama Prefectural Chichibu Industrial Testing Station, the complex became a nationally registered cultural property in 2001. Its main building and sawtooth-roofed workshop present yarn winding, warping, printing and weaving. Chichibu meisen’s hogushi-nassen technique applies patterns to warp threads before the cloth is woven. Following those stages helps explain how the finished textile acquires its characteristic colours and patterns.
Choose a short craft session or warp printing
A handwoven coaster costs ¥1,500, takes at least thirty minutes and accommodates up to five participants. Indigo handkerchiefs and stencil-dyed tote bags or drawstring bags each cost ¥1,500 and take about an hour. A one-person, one-hour warp-printing session costs ¥10,000, plus ¥1,000 for each extra colour. Workshop charges are separate from admission. Reserve the session at least one week before visiting.
Autumn events and exhibition-only visits
The autumn festival on October 24–25, 2026, is scheduled to include course participants’ work, silk-thread, printing and weaving demonstrations, and kimono airing. Ordinary admission is adult ¥210 and primary/junior high ¥100; groups of at least 25 pay ¥150 and ¥50. Eligible certificate holders and one carer enter free. Choose between a straightforward exhibition visit and a longer stay with a prearranged practical activity.
Plan around the museum and workshop hours
The museum opens 09:00–16:00 and closes December 29–January 3. Workshop reception runs in two periods, 09:00–11:30 and 13:00–15:00, rather than continuously through lunch. Walk five minutes from Seibu-Chichibu or ten from Ohanabatake. Parking provides twenty ordinary spaces and one accessible space; the west entrance has a ramp. Fit exhibitions, reserved activities and a town meal around the closing time and the length of the selected workshop.
Other stops to combine within Chichibu
Central sightseeing, stops in Yoshida or Arakawa, and mountain roads towards Otaki or Mitsumine require different travel times. Fit meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival around the next stop by car or railway. Choose related parking according to its own facility or area and the applicable use conditions.
