Hyakkenzan Gorge brings waterfalls, pools and great boulders together in the forests of Tanabe’s Oto area. Walks range from a return outing along the stream to a longer route incorporating the 999-metre summit of Mount Hyakkenzan. Distance and fitness shape the choice: the waterfalls are reached on mountain paths, rather than simply viewed from a roadside parking overlook.

Waterfalls and pools along the gorge
Under old-growth forest, roughly three kilometres of stream contain more than thirty waterfalls, pools and striking boulders. Places such as Kaya Falls and Amagoi Falls show changing relationships between water and rock. Potholes provide another indication of how flowing water has shaped the landscape over time. A walk moves between distinct falls and pools along the same stream. The stated length describes the gorge itself, rather than a fixed return distance measured from the car park.
Returning at Inuochi Falls or continuing to the summit
An out-and-back walk to Inuochi Falls is one option, while another continues toward Mount Hyakkenzan’s summit. The published summit-including route covers 9.0 kilometres, with three hours twenty minutes of walking and 920 metres of cumulative elevation; rests and viewing require additional time. Include time to view waterfalls and rest, allowing the return schedule to extend beyond the walking figure. Choose a route and turnaround point from the map rather than combining the gorge outing and summit ascent into one assumed short walk.
Conditions in the prefectural natural park
The gorge lies within Oto Hikigawa Prefectural Natural Park, where collecting plants and similar natural material is prohibited. Paths include ropes and junctions, and footing can become particularly slippery after rain. Wear suitable shoes with grip and use level places for rests. Groups should regroup at junctions, and walkers should assess ropes before relying on them. The forest also requires awareness of bears, hornets and irritating lacquer-family plants. Carry rubbish out and leave the vegetation in place while enjoying the scenery.
Starting from the free entrance car park
Entrance parking is free and has toilets and a vending machine. The tourism bureau gives roughly fifty minutes by car from Kii-Tanabe Station to the trailhead. Guided eco-tour arrangements also use the gorge car park as a meeting point, providing an alternative to walking independently. Arrive with time to organise equipment and water as well as complete the chosen route. Nearby Hyakkenzan Gorge Camp Village is a separate paid accommodation facility; free trailhead parking does not include a bungalow or campsite reservation.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
