The residence and the creation of the museum
The museum opens part of the Kotani residence, a family traditionally traced to the Kamakura period. Buildings include an Edo-period main house and storehouses, with a gatehouse said to have come from the Hakata domain. The main house, gatehouse and storehouses were registered as tangible cultural properties in 2005. Local historian Michiakira Kotani developed the collections through the Izumi local archive established in 1930 and the museum founded in 1971. Documents and tools preserve aspects of life transformed by Senboku’s development, while the residence itself forms part of the historical experience.
From rural tools to Sakai firearms and ancient tiles
Folk collections range from farming and woodland tools to votive pictures and local toys, linking work with belief. Archaeology includes tiles from ancient temples in southern Osaka, inscribed Doto tiles and Sue pottery from the Suemura kilns. Historical and art collections extend to Sakai firearms, armour, Minato and Tani ceramics, and Sakai printed cloth. Holdings also include seventeenth-century Tale of Genji and tea-making screens, and blocks and prints associated with Kyosen Kawasaki. Follow the displays arranged for the day, as the museum’s wider holdings and individual objects on view can vary.
Admission, the entry deadline and reservations
Open 10:00–16:00, with last admission at 15:30. Admission is ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for elementary through high-school students. Closed Mondays, moving to the next day when Monday is a holiday. Additional closures may be set, including during Obon. Reservations are available; arrange them at least seven days ahead. Seasonal programmes have included displays of the family’s hina dolls alongside the residence and permanent collections. For an afternoon visit, plan around the admission deadline as well as closing time, leaving enough time to see both buildings and objects.
