Kumano Kodokan stands opposite Takijiri-oji, a principal starting point for the Nakahechi pilgrimage route. It combines historical displays with local visitor information and a place to rest. Admission is free both for walkers preparing for a longer journey and for visitors making a short stop at the shrine to learn about the background of Kumano pilgrimage.

Five areas introducing Nakahechi
Five areas cover visitor information, video storytelling, history, rest and merchandise. Displays associated with Kumano kaishi poetry sheets and Takijiri-oji’s holdings, together with local films and route materials, introduce pilgrimage and the shrines along the way. Created through a fiscal-1994 community-development project, the building serves as a regional information point. Visitors can make a short exhibition stop or spend additional time understanding the route before beginning a walk into the hills.
A shrine stop or the start of a mountain walk
Takijiri-oji, immediately opposite, is an important threshold into Kumano’s sacred landscape. Public toilets, small shops and rest facilities nearby support preparations for walking. The onward route toward Takahara, however, begins with a steep mountain ascent. A free exhibition and short shrine visit differ in equipment and time requirements from continuing along that trail. Use the local maps and information to organise the intended walk and its return transport, rather than treating the onward route as a level extension of the museum visit.
Heian costumes as a separate experience
The Nakahechi Tourism Association also offers Heian-costume dressing, priced at ¥3,500 per person from September 1, 2025. Changing takes about fifteen minutes and the loan lasts up to one hour. Use is limited to Takijiri Shrine grounds or the area around the Kodokan, with visitors taking their own photographs. Apply through the association’s dedicated form or by telephone. This is separate from admission to the Kodokan, which remains free for visitors who do not take the costume option. Treat dressing and photography as their own experience, distinct from walking a mountain route in hiking clothes, and fit the activity to the visit date and party.
The Kurisugawa location and bus arrival
The address is 1222-1 Kurisugawa, Nakahechi-cho. Hours are 08:30–17:15, with no regular closure apart from the New Year period. Ryujin and Meiko buses serve the Nakahechi area from Kii-Tanabe Station, with Takijiri bus stop providing a starting point for local visits. A short outing can combine the shrine with displays and a rest back in the building. This facility is distinct from the similarly named World Heritage Kumano Kodo building in Kumano City, Mie; set the destination to Kurisugawa in Tanabe’s Nakahechi district.
Other stops to combine within Tanabe
Tanabe extends from its coastal centre into the mountain districts of Ryujin, Nakahechi, Oto and Hongu. Fit the next stop around meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival, allowing time for both road travel and any walking on the Kumano Kodo. Choose parking according to the facility or district visited and its use conditions.
