Terrace planting and waterside scenery
Opened in April 1987, the Western-style garden includes terraces, wetland planting, lawns and a granite rock garden. Seasonal combinations use both flowers and foliage colour. Autumn brings salvias and the changing colours of waterside trees such as bald cypress. Seasonal beds offer ideas for planting design. The next special Autumn Orchid Exhibition is scheduled in the plant building for November 20–23, 2026, displaying around one hundred autumn-flowering orchids. Exhibition hours are 09:00–16:00, ending at 15:00 on the final day; these differ from the park’s overall hours.
Tropical greenhouses and herbs linked to Mito
The main display greenhouse introduces tropical plants, while the tropical-fruit greenhouse includes herbs. A peacock topiary occupies the greenhouse courtyard’s Peacock Garden, viewed from a deck. The Mito Yomeishu medicinal herb garden combines general herb planting with a section linked to plants used in the Edo-period Mito domain. A trial garden behind the plant building supports experimental cultivation.
Last entry at 16:00 and the local senior rate
Open 9:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:00. Monday closure moves to the next weekday after holidays; the New Year closure is December 29–January 3. Adults pay ¥300, schoolchildren ¥150 and preschoolers enter free. The ¥150 senior rate applies to residents aged sixty and over in Mito, Kasama, Hitachinaka, Naka, Omitama, Ibaraki, Oarai, Shirosato and Tokai. Admission is payable in cash only.
Walking from Kobuki Jinja-mae and using the grounds
From Mito Station north stand 4, take a Mito Medical Centre bus via Sakuranomaki High School for about twenty-five minutes, then walk fifteen minutes from Kobuki Jinja-mae. Service from Akatsuka’s south side is advertised on weekdays only. Free parking accommodates 350 cars, about twenty minutes from Mito interchange. Pets, bicycles and balls are excluded. Greenhouse and terrace rest areas allow a visit alternating between planting and indoor displays.
Other stops to combine within Mito
Visits to Nanatsudo Park, the forest park and Uchihara need driving or bus time beyond a station-area walk. Coordinate flower-garden gates, café closing days and hotel meals. The listed car parks are options for journeys within the city, with a different purpose from each attraction’s own parking. Compare Uchihara’s short-stay tariff with Akatsuka’s capped parking around the itinerary.
