From Toshinaga’s castle to a public park
After a fire at Toyama Castle, Maeda Toshinaga moved into Takaoka Castle in 1609. Traditionally attributed to Takayama Ukon’s design, it was abolished under the 1615 one-castle-per-province rule, while its basic structure survived. Residents campaigned against disposal in the Meiji period, leading to its preservation as a park in 1875. It became a National Historic Site in 2015.
Moats, the main enclosure and seasonal trees
Moats occupy about one third of the roughly 210,000-square-metre grounds. Views change between Asahi Bridge and the main enclosure or the Masugata moat from Sakurababa. Cherry, maple, zelkova and pine support walks from spring blossom to autumn foliage. Link the main lawn, Art Forest and poetry monuments according to the distance you wish to walk.
Indoor stops and outdoor walks
A museum, zoo, shrines and resting places provide stops within the park. Their opening days and hours are separate from park entry. Fishing is prohibited in the moats, which support fish and birds. Dogs must be kept on leads; allow room for other walkers on bridges and paths.
Walking from stations and free car parks
Walk fifteen minutes from Takaoka Station, four from JR Himi Line Etchu-Nakagawa or three from Manyosen’s Kyukan Iryo Center-mae stop. Driving takes about fifteen minutes from Takaoka Interchange. North and Odakeyabu lots are free and open throughout the day; North has accessible spaces. Odakeyabu’s five coach spaces are first come, without reservations. Long-term parking is not permitted.
Other stops to combine within Takaoka
Kojo Park and the Great Buddha area support a walking route based at Daibutsu Ryokan. Jigen is near the station, separate from the park, requiring a city walk from North parking. Sunday ramen service ends at 18:00, and the ryokan has fixed meal times and a 23:00 curfew. Plan from the daytime park visit through the evening return.
