Urayama Dam combines views of Lake Chichibu Sakura and the city with displays inside the dam itself. Urarapia, its disaster-prevention museum, explains the facility’s role, while interior exhibits introduce the former Urayama area and construction. The museum, elevator and exterior staircase have different access conditions, so the available route depends on which parts are open.
At a glance
| Visits | 09:00–17:00; free |
|---|---|
| Year-end closure | December 29, 2026–January 3, 2027 |
| Inspections | November 17 / December 15: elevator and interior closed, museum open |
| Stairs | Exterior footing stairs closed; interior wheelchair stairlift weekdays only |
From lake and city views to the dam interior
From the crest, look towards Chichibu city or across Lake Chichibu Sakura, with sculptures also placed on the dam top. The elevator travels 132 metres, leading to interior displays about the former Urayama area, the dam’s purposes and its construction. The visit therefore offers more than a view of a large structure from outside: it connects the surrounding landscape with information within the facility itself.
Separate the museum, elevator and staircase routes
Urarapia combines educational displays with a role as a temporary disaster shelter stocked with emergency supplies; dam cards are distributed here. The exterior footing staircase is closed for safety and cannot form part of a walking route between levels. The wheelchair stairlift in the interior gallery operates only on weekdays. Consider the museum visit separately from access through the dam and use of its different circulation facilities.
The museum remains available on elevator inspection days
General visiting hours are 09:00–17:00, excluding December 29, 2026–January 3, 2027. Inspections on November 17 and December 15 close both elevator and interior access, while the disaster-prevention museum remains open normally. Severe weather or operational requirements may suspend public access. Facilities on the reservoir’s left-bank dam-site side are also inaccessible because the municipal approach road is closed; they cannot be included as additional stops.
Guided groups and access through Arakawa
Staff-led group visits operate on weekdays only. Fax the application at least two weeks ahead and obtain confirmation; the free visit takes about an hour and meets at Urarapia. This arrangement differs from ordinary self-guided visits. Drive about twenty minutes from Chichibu City Hall via Route 140 and Prefectural Route 73. A walking approach from Urayamaguchi Station and a municipal-bus option from Seibu-Chichibu offer alternatives to driving.
Other stops to combine within Chichibu
Central sightseeing, stops in Yoshida or Arakawa, and mountain roads towards Otaki or Mitsumine require different travel times. Fit meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival around the next stop by car or railway. Choose related parking according to its own facility or area and the applicable use conditions.
