Kurashiki Archaeological Museum combines the historic townscape with the much older story of Kibi.

From a rice granary to ancient Kibi
The museum opened in November 1950 after an Edo-period rice granary was converted into galleries. Its patterned plaster walls form part of the characteristic Kurashiki townscape. Kibi extends across present-day Okayama and eastern Hiroshima. The museum has investigated shell mounds, Yayoi burial mounds and later tombs, giving the visit a geographical and historical reach beyond the preserved streets immediately outside.
Read everyday history through pottery and ironwork
Collections span the Palaeolithic through the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. Notable holdings include Jomon pottery from Satogi shell mound, a pedestal-mounted house-shaped Yayoi vessel, ironwork from Kanakurayama tomb, a Nara-period cemetery land-purchase document and a three-colour glazed jar. Shapes and purposes provide ways to consider food, homes and burial practices. Relate these archaeological periods to the much later granary surrounding the galleries.
Plan for the limited opening days and 15:00 close
Regular opening is Friday, Saturday, Sunday and national or substitute holidays, 10:00–15:00, with last entry at 14:45. Monday–Thursday are closed except holidays, alongside the New Year period. Admission is ¥500 general, ¥400 high-school/university and ¥300 primary/junior-high. Place the galleries around late morning or lunchtime when combining them with nearby meals and walks, allowing for the earlier closing time.
Walk from the station and note the future closure
The address is 1-3-13 Chuo, about fifteen minutes on foot from Kurashiki Station or twenty by car from Kurashiki or Hayashima interchange. There is no dedicated parking. Research, maintenance and building work bring a planned closure from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2030. Temporary opening for a special exhibition around February–March 2028 is planned separately from the normal schedule.
