Explore regional pottery and baskets from around the world
Opened in 1948, the museum uses late-Edo rice granaries and displays about six hundred objects across themed spaces. Okayama folkcraft, Tottori and Shimane pottery, metalwork and baskets from around the world form different parts of the route. Hearth and furniture rooms also host changing displays, with buildings arranged around a courtyard. Compare weaving, glazes and handles to notice practical decisions embedded in familiar types of objects.
Two exhibitions continue through December 6
Through December 6, 2026, Formosa Taiwan presents about sixty works, mainly textiles made by Indigenous peoples of Taiwan. A second exhibition explores lettering as pattern through about seventy objects, including ceramics and textiles. Some lettering exhibits are temporarily removed November 3–8 during a craft sales exhibition. Consider that limited change when choosing a date to view both displays.
Admission, group visits and certificate concessions
Admission is ¥1,200 general, ¥500 high-school/university and ¥300 primary/junior-high. Groups of twenty or more book ahead and pay ¥1,000/400/200. One group may enter in batches of up to thirty-five. Showing an eligible disability certificate gives rates of ¥500 for adults, ¥250 high-school/university and ¥200 primary/junior-high. The shop can be visited without museum admission, making a shopping-only stop possible.
Opening time, last admission and walking access
Open 10:00–17:00, with admission until 16:30. Mondays normally close, shifted to the following day after a Monday holiday; Golden Week and Obon have opening exceptions. The New Year closure is December 29–January 1. At 1-4-11 Chuo, the museum is about fifteen minutes on foot from Kurashiki Station, without dedicated parking. A morning riverside walk can lead into the galleries and then a meal in Honmachi.
