An English landscape of ponds and dams
Designed by a British company using British building materials, the park incorporates features of eighteenth-century English landscape gardening. Four connected central ponds follow serpentine curves that favour natural irregularity. Five dams, pavilions and a ruin-like folly introduce built features into the water and woodland scenery. Explore how the course of the water changes the views of these structures.
Flowers within the Secret Garden
Brick walls and hedges surround the Secret Garden, where English roses and other seasonal flowers accompany Victorian-style pergolas and benches. Its densely planted cottage-garden character contrasts with the eighteenth-century landscape around the ponds. The flower garden opens 8:30–17:00, shortening to 16:00 from November through February. Although the wider park has no stated time limit, the flower garden’s gates follow these hours.
The boardwalk closure and central parking route
Part of the boardwalk near the northern parking area is closed until further notice because of deterioration. Central parking provides a convenient approach to the Secret Garden, including a ramp along that route. The western parking approach has no ramp, while stairs, slopes, steps and natural paths occur across the grounds. Wheelchair and stroller users should base their visit on the central approach and the routes available there.
Bus and walking access and the water after dark
Take an Omiya Eigyosho-bound bus from Mito Station north stand 7 for about thirty minutes, then walk around twenty minutes from Nogyo Shikenjo Iriguchi. By car, allow about ten minutes from Mito-kita Smart or Naka interchange. Four parking areas are free; large vehicles need a reservation. Lighting is deliberately limited, especially around the dams, so daylight makes it easier to appreciate the water and garden details.
Other stops to combine within Mito
Visits to Nanatsudo Park, the forest park and Uchihara need driving or bus time beyond a station-area walk. Coordinate flower-garden gates, café closing days and hotel meals. The listed car parks are options for journeys within the city, with a different purpose from each attraction’s own parking. Compare Uchihara’s short-stay tariff with Akatsuka’s capped parking around the itinerary.
