This small museum preserves tools and interpretations of mountain-village life in Otaki. Forests, hillside agriculture, woodland work and the route across the pass connect the area’s natural surroundings with the people who lived there. Within the Otaki Onsen roadside-station complex, it adds a local-history visit to a day involving a meal or a separately operated hot-spring bath.

A museum preserving the work and life of the mountains
Opened in 1993 to preserve disappearing local tools, the museum begins with the forests of Okuchichibu, including serow, beech and mizunara oak. Further displays cover agriculture in steep mountain surroundings and woodland work connected with the shogunate’s forests and villagers’ livelihoods. The objects give a practical human dimension to a landscape-oriented journey, showing how people worked within the mountains rather than simply presenting scenery.
Explore the pass route and an early-Showa home
The Chichibu route display introduces movement across the mountains through Jomon stone tools and coins associated with prayers for safe passage found at Karisaka Pass. A reconstructed early-Showa domestic setting includes a veranda illustrating Little New Year decoration-making. A terrain model and film about Otaki’s past, present and natural environment help connect the implements with the houses and landscape in which they were used.
Distinguish museum admission from the other facilities
Admission is adult ¥210 and primary/junior high ¥100, with preschool children and visitors aged 65 or over admitted free. Groups of twenty or more receive a discount. Thursdays close, moving to the next day when Thursday is a public holiday, with an additional New Year closure. Yuyukan is a separate hot-spring facility and bathing is not included. Shops and restaurants also follow their own hours, so plan around the museum’s final admission.
Fit the museum into travel through Otaki
Opening is 09:00–17:00, final admission 16:30. From Mitsumineguchi Station, take a bus towards Chichibuko and alight at Otaki Onsen Yuyukan. Drivers follow Route 140 about fifty kilometres from Hanazono IC; parking is on site. The museum’s address is 4277-4 Otaki, distinct from the bathhouse within the same complex. It can provide a historical stop before or after the Mitsumine area or during an Arakawa valley journey.
Other stops to combine within Chichibu
Central sightseeing, stops in Yoshida or Arakawa, and mountain roads towards Otaki or Mitsumine require different travel times. Fit meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival around the next stop by car or railway. Choose related parking according to its own facility or area and the applicable use conditions.
