Telescope, terrace and a small planetarium
The third-floor observing room has a thirty-centimetre refracting telescope used to introduce seasonal celestial objects. The surrounding terrace offers daytime views and city lights. On the second floor, a planetarium accommodates around ten people reclining to watch the sky. Books on space and constellation mythology and first-floor astronomical photographs add indoor interest. The observing dome is operating normally again, but some scaffolding remains.
No reservation required and same-day re-entry
Ordinary admission needs no reservation: adults ¥310, elementary through high-school pupils ¥150 and preschool children free. Groups of twenty or more, excluding preschoolers from the count, pay ¥280 for adults and ¥130 for children. Payment is cash only. The same ticket permits re-entry that day, allowing a daytime visit, dinner and a return for night observing. The observing room and planetarium are guided according to visitors’ interests rather than fixed timed sessions. Groups with young children require at least one adult per five preschoolers.
November opening dates and checking road works
Ordinary hours are 13:00–22:00, reception until 21:30, closing Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Tuesdays only in summer holidays, with holiday openings and substitute closures. The operator lists November 3, 2026 open, November 5 closed in lieu, and December 30–January 1 closed. Before taking the mountain road, confirm same-day opening and construction-road conditions with the observatory on 0965-45-3453. Its official access page warns of some road works and remaining scaffolding around the observing dome.
Approach by Routes 3 and 219
At 335-2 Nakatani-ha, Sakamotomachi, the observatory is around thirty-five minutes by car from Yatsushiro or Yatsushiro-minami Interchange via Routes 3 and 219, with about twenty parking spaces. The narrow, difficult Route 258 approach from Hinagu is discouraged. Follow signs after turning uphill; large coaches are also discouraged. Public transport to Imaizumi leaves a five-minute walk to the trail entrance and roughly seventy minutes climbing. The trail is slippery during and after bad weather, which must be considered when choosing this approach.
