Mashumaru preserves the history of the railway ferry link across the Tsugaru Strait. The ship worked until the final day of Seikan ferry services on March 13, 1988, and remains at the former Hakodate No. 2 berth.
See the original bridge and radio room
The bridge and radio room retain their working appearance. The former forward Green-class passenger lounge now houses displays of original components, models, panels and films explaining the ferry service and the ship’s operation. Visitors cannot enter the vehicle deck, main engine room or central control room directly; these can be viewed through controllable monitor cameras in the exhibition. Compare the spaces serving passengers with the railway freight role of the vessel.
Understand school-age and concession tickets
Admission is ¥500 for adults and university students, ¥250 for elementary through high-school pupils, and free for preschool children. Groups of twenty or more pay ¥400/¥200; annual passes cost ¥1,000/¥500. Pupils attending Hakodate elementary or junior-high schools enter free by stating their school and year. Local residents aged 65+ pay ¥250 with the city card. Disability documentation allows free admission for the holder and up to two accompanying assistants.
Plan for last entry and weather restrictions
April–October hours are 08:30–18:00, with last entry at 17:00; November–March hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00. December 31–January 3 are scheduled closure days, though special opening may be announced. Inspections and repairs can also close the ship. Wind, snow or ice may shut part or all of the outside decks, and a tsunami advisory brings immediate closure. Follow onboard safety guidance when conditions change. The museum is closed November 16, 2026 for staff training and cleaning.
Walk from the station and validate parking
Walk four minutes from JR Hakodate Station or five from Hakodate-ekimae tram stop. The boarding entrance is reached by stairs to the ship’s second deck, roughly a conventional building’s third-floor height; there are no lifts or escalators. Wheelchair visits require assistance and advance practical planning. Hakodate Station Square and municipal Wakamatsu-cho parking offer up to two hours free for museum visitors when the parking ticket is presented at reception. Carry the ticket onboard.
