See the exterior of a historic working convent
Founded in 1898 as Japan’s first contemplative women’s convent, the community is formally Our Lady of the Angels Trappistine Abbey. The present church was rebuilt in 1927 after a fire, with brick walls and rounded windows among its architectural features. View the buildings from the public forecourt as part of Hakodate’s religious heritage. Normal visits centre on the exterior and designated public areas; the sisters’ residential precinct is not an open sightseeing route.
Visit the exhibition and convent shop
An exhibition room adjoining the shop introduces the convent’s history and the community’s life of prayer, work and reading. The sisters’ madeleine-style cakes and cookies are among the souvenirs associated with a visit. Leave time for the forecourt and displays as well as shopping. This gives context to the confectionery as part of the work supporting a religious community, rather than treating the shop as a separate retail stop.
Follow seasonal gate times and visitor boundaries
The gate, shop and exhibition open 08:30–16:30 in March, April, October and November; 08:30–17:00 in May–September; and 09:00–16:00 in December–February. December 29–January 2 is closed. There is no routine weekly closure, though works may cause temporary closures. Public forecourt and exhibition visits are free. Occasional invitations to special services do not mean the church is routinely open for independent interior sightseeing; remain within the public visitor areas.
Reach Kamiyunokawa and use neighbouring parking
The convent is at 346 Kamiyunokawa-cho, ten minutes on foot from Trappistine-iriguchi bus stop. It has no dedicated visitor parking; drivers use the paid parking at neighbouring Shimin-no-mori. A park walk can be combined with the visit, allowing for the convent’s gate-closing time. This is a different establishment from the men’s Trappist monastery in Hokuto, so use the Kamiyunokawa address when selecting a destination or planning transport.
