A century-old building and a small room count
The inn began as Hamaya in the late Meiji period and adopted the Tamaikan name in the early Showa years. Wooden posts, stairs and tatami retain the character of an older spa inn. Fuji and Ume are standard Japanese rooms. Hagi is above a bath, with bathing sounds reflected in its room category, and has no private bathroom. Room characteristics matter when quiet is a priority.
The spring below the garden and a private-bath room
A source thirty-one metres beneath the garden supplies nearly colourless spring water on a continuous-flow basis. Its roughly 55°C source temperature varies seasonally and is adjusted for bathing. Indoor and open-air baths combine the wooden setting with fresh air. Satsuki has an eight-mat main room, a four-and-a-half-mat adjoining room and its own continuously flowing open-air bath, an option for guests seeking private bathing.
Choose a kaiseki meal and allow for local taxes
Meal-inclusive options include seasonal basic kaiseki, a course with 100 grams of Shimane wagyu steak per person, and a course with a whole simmered nodoguro fish. Accommodation prices depend on room, date and meals. Matsue accommodation tax is ¥200 per person per night when the tax-exclusive room-only equivalent is at least ¥5,000; lower amounts are exempt. The standard hot-spring overnight bathing tax is ¥150 per person per day.
Child policy and parking directions at the entrance
Standard room use runs from 16:00 until 10:00 next morning. Children are not accepted because of the older wooden building’s stairs, handrails and sound transmission, and there is no smoking area. JR Tamatsukuri-Onsen Station is about ten minutes away by taxi. Drivers should first stop at the entrance for directions to free parking roughly four minutes away. Unloading luggage first makes the walk back easier.
