From the town model to the garden
A 1:600 castle-town model can be compared with maps to trace changes in streets and canals. Objects and films cover domain administration, cotton and ginseng industries, food and festivals. Remove shoes inside and rest in a roughly thirty-mat room overlooking a dry garden with the castle keep beyond it. The reconstructed Asahi retainer-house range and tea room traditionally associated with Rikyu add architectural interest.
Basic admission and eligibility for free entry
Basic admission costs ¥700, ¥560 for groups of twenty or more and ¥350 for Matsue residents with proof of address. Registered city residents aged sixty-five or over enter the basic exhibition free. Junior-high age and younger enter basic and special exhibitions free. Present an eligible disability certificate, medical-benefit certificate or care-insurance document showing recognised care/support needs for free admission with one assistant.
Armour through December and combined tickets
The armour exhibition runs October 16–December 13, 2026. Admission is ¥750, ¥600 for groups of twenty+, or ¥380 for city residents; a basic-exhibition combination costs ¥1,100, groups ¥880. High-school, university and vocational students receive group rates with student ID. A separate castle-keep/basic-exhibition ticket costs ¥1,520, free for primary and junior-high pupils, and is sold at both venues. It differs from the special-exhibition combination.
Closing days and reaching the free car park
Open 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30. Monday closures move to the next weekday for holidays; December 29–January 1 is closed, while November 2, 2026 opens. From Matsue Station, take the Lake Line thirteen minutes and walk three from the museum/boat-pier stop. Twelve free spaces, numbered 0–11 south of Kitahori Bridge, are a minute away on an eastbound one-way road; buses cannot park. Accessible parking is on the museum’s north side.
