Read the stories behind handwritten material
Handwritten manuscripts, letters, works and personal objects offer ways to consider how literature took shape. Ishikawa Takuboku is a central subject, while material relating to Hasegawa Shiro and Yanagawa Goichi broadens the city’s literary connections. Allow time to compare handwriting and revisions with the accompanying explanations. These details give a different perspective from reading a finished printed text, particularly for visitors interested in the working lives of writers.
Visit a former bank dating from 1921
Built in 1921 as the Dai-Ichi Bank Hakodate branch, the three-storey building combines brick and reinforced concrete. It later passed through another business use before being donated to the city in 1989 and strengthened for museum use. Combine careful reading inside with a look at the exterior. The setting places literature within a wider streetscape shaped by commerce and financial institutions in the port city.
Combine admission with nearby museums
Admission is ¥300 for adults or ¥150 for students and schoolchildren; groups of twenty or more pay ¥240/¥120. Combined adult tickets for this museum, the Northern Peoples Museum, Old British Consulate and Old Public Hall cost ¥500 for two, ¥720 for three or ¥840 for four. Hakodate residents aged 65+ receive half-price single admission. Eligible local schoolchildren and disability-certificate holders have free admission. Choose facilities and the applicable category before buying.
Allow for November maintenance and winter hours

Scheduled closures include November 9–11 and December 14, 2026, January 13, February 10 and March 11, 2027, plus December 31–January 3. The Takuboku anniversary exhibition about people who supported him runs until November 8, 2026. The museum is one minute from Suehirocho tram stop. Food and drink are prohibited inside, so leave refreshments for another stop.
