Compare materials and everyday design
Displays introduce the living cultures of Ainu and other northern peoples. Look at how clothing patterns and the shapes of tools relate to available materials and everyday purposes, rather than treating them simply as decoration. The museum occupies the former Bank of Japan branch, built in 1926. Its exterior adds an architectural stop to a west-Hakodate walk, while the galleries provide time for a closer cultural visit.
Choose a single or combined ticket
Single admission costs ¥300 for adults or ¥150 for students and schoolchildren. Combined tickets cover two, three or four of this museum, the Literature Museum, Old British Consulate and Old Public Hall: adult prices are ¥500/¥720/¥840, student prices ¥250/¥360/¥420. Hakodate residents aged 65+ pay ¥150 for single admission; this concession does not halve combined tickets. Eligible local schoolchildren and disability-certificate holders enter free.
Book mukkuri activities a week ahead
Mukkuri making-and-playing or playing activities cost ¥1,000 each, excluding admission, and require booking at least one week ahead. Instruction is in Japanese. Paper-cutting activities are requested at reception and cost ¥100, with the activity fee waived for elementary and junior-high pupils. Pairing an activity with gallery viewing gives time to consider patterns and handwork. The making session uses carving tools, so participants follow the activity instructions.
Check seasonal hours and maintenance closures
Hours are 09:00–19:00 in April–October and 09:00–17:00 in November–March. In addition to the New Year closure, scheduled maintenance dates include December 8 and 12–19, 2026, and January 20, February 17 and March 24, 2027. Suehirocho tram stop is one minute away; Kokaido-mae bus stop is three minutes away. There is no dedicated parking, making public transport and walking useful options for a visit.
