茶房菊泉は、酒問屋の別邸として建てられた家屋で甘味や軽食を楽しめる茶房です。元町の坂道を歩く途中で、七輪を使って自分で焼く団子やおにぎりを味わえます。歴史的な建物を眺める街歩きに、座って過ごす時間を加えられる一軒です。

別邸の建物で元町の時間を過ごす

建物は酒問屋の別邸として建てられ、1990年まで住居として使われていた家屋です。伝統的建造物の指定をきっかけに、茶房として人を迎える場所になりました。元町の教会や坂道を外から眺める散策の途中で、室内に入り、建物の使われ方の変化にも目を向けられます。旧函館区公会堂から八幡坂へ向かうコースの途中にあり、歩く時間と甘味を取る休憩を組み合わせやすい位置です。

団子を焼いて、粒あんやみたらしを合わせる

自分で焼く団子のセットは、七輪で好みの焼き加減にして、北海道産粒あん、みたらし、きなこ黒蜜などを合わせる内容です。桜葉入りの最中にも、あんや団子をのせて楽しめます。ドリンク付きで税込1,380円。おにぎりのセットも1,380円で、昆布出汁と醤油のご飯に大葉・ちりめん山椒を加え、焼いて食べます。小さな火を使うため、器具の扱いに気を付け、落ち着いて食べる時間を取ります。

甘味セットと1人1注文の条件

アイスクリームと最中のセット、ぜんざいと最中のセットは、それぞれドリンク付き1,030円です。温かい飲み物や冷たい飲み物の単品もあり、歩いた後の休憩に合わせて選べます。店内飲食は小学生以下の子どもを除き、1人につき飲み物または料理1注文が必要です。土産コーナーは飲食なしの買い物だけでも利用できます。食事と買い物の利用方法を分けると、グループでも注文を決めやすくなります。

17時ラストオーダーと坂道のアクセス

10時～17時30分、ラストオーダー17時で、通常の定休日はありません。所在地は元町14-5、市電末広町から徒歩7分で上り坂を含みます。旧函館区公会堂から徒歩3分、函館山ロープウェイから徒歩7分の案内です。車では近くの元町観光駐車場を利用する経路が示されています。坂を上ってから休むか、休憩後に教会群へ進むかを選び、冬は足元と日没時刻に合わせて移動できます。

Sabo Kikuizumi occupies a former liquor merchant’s villa in Motomachi. Its grill-your-own dango and rice balls add a hands-on food stop to a walk through the sloping historic district. The building setting and a seated break offer a different pace from viewing the neighbourhood’s architecture entirely from outside.

Pause inside a former merchant’s villa

Originally a liquor merchant’s villa, the building remained a home until 1990 before its heritage status helped lead to cafe use. A stop inside offers another way to experience Motomachi’s buildings after viewing churches and slopes from the street. Consider how a domestic space has changed use while retaining its setting. The cafe lies on the walking route between the Old Public Hall and Hachimanzaka, making a seated sweet or light meal a possible break in that route.

Grill dango and choose sweet toppings

The dango set lets diners grill rice dumplings to their preferred finish and add red-bean paste, sweet soy glaze or kinako with brown-sugar syrup. Sakura-leaf monaka wafers can also hold the toppings. The set with a drink costs ¥1,380. The rice-ball set is also ¥1,380, using kombu-stock and soy-seasoned rice with shiso and small fish with sansho, ready to grill. Allow a relaxed meal and handle the small tabletop heat source carefully.

Choose sweets and follow the ordering rule

Ice cream with monaka and zenzai with monaka are each ¥1,030 including a drink. Individual hot and cold drinks provide other choices for a walking break. Dine-in customers must each order a drink or food item, except elementary-age children and younger. The souvenir area may be visited for shopping without dining. This distinction helps a group decide between sitting down for refreshments and making a shorter retail visit without assuming the same ordering conditions apply.

Allow for last orders and the uphill approach

Hours are 10:00–17:30, with last orders 17:00 and no regular closing day. The address is 14-5 Motomachi, seven minutes uphill from Suehirocho tram stop, three from the Old Public Hall or seven from the ropeway. Nearby Motomachi tourist parking is the suggested driving option. Choose whether to rest after climbing or continue towards the churches afterwards, allowing for winter footing and fading daylight along the sloping streets.
