Yasuzuka makes and sells Japanese sweets in the former copper-mining town of Ashio. Its brown-sugar, bean-paste and agar ankodama and coin-shaped monaka connect local flavours with town history. A short walk from Tsudo Station, it offers a compact shopping stop for gifts during a visit to the area.

Four generations of sweets in Ashio
At 3-1 Matsubara, the shop makes and retails wagashi. It has around one hundred years of history across four generations. Alongside the industrial heritage, buying sweets from a working town shop provides contact with Ashio’s continuing everyday life. Choose takeaway confectionery as part of a walk around Tsudo Station.
Brown-sugar ankodama and their glossy coating
Ankodama are the shop’s brown-sugar speciality, recognised under the Nikko Brand scheme. Smooth paste made with Hokkaido azuki and Ashio water is shaped into balls and enclosed with sugar, brown sugar and agar. Their shiny exterior contrasts with the bean filling. This sweet has long been part of the town’s confectionery tradition.
Coin-shaped monaka and other wagashi
Ashijisen monaka take their shape from coins made with copper produced in Ashio, turning local history into confectionery. They provide a different gift option from brown-sugar ankodama. Other products include dango, suama and manju, with orders also accepted for red-bean rice and mochi. Other choices include sauce- or bean-topped skewered dumplings and white or pink suama.
Station walks and closing days
Tsudo Station is about five minutes away on foot. Hours are 8:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays, with paired Tuesday–Wednesday closure also listed at month end. Account for that when selecting a late-month visiting day. Combine mine sightseeing or a town walk with buying sweets before the return train. This is a confectionery shopping stop to add alongside a separate meal.
Other stops to combine within Nikko
Ashio links the mine trolley and tunnels, a confectioner near Tsudo Station and a valley hot-spring inn. Construction adds walking and steps between the mine entrance, exit and parking, so arrive with time before last admission. Coordinate bath reception, confectioner closures and trains or a prebooked guest transfer when combining the town with the mountain stay.
