From Edo mining to modern industry
Copper was discovered at Bizen-Tateyama in 1610, and the mine prospered under direct Tokugawa control. Furukawa Ichibei took over in 1877, developing it with new technology and equipment. Period displays recreate mining work; the copper museum explains processing from ore, while the coin-casting exhibit introduces Ashio-marked coins. These displays add industrial context to the mine walk.
An outbound trolley followed by a mine walk
The trolley runs one way from the station to roughly 150 metres inside, followed by an approximately 300-metre walk. Departures start at 9:00, normally about ten minutes apart outside busy periods, ending at 16:15. Admission is ¥830 for adults and ¥410 for primary/junior-high pupils, with preschool children free. Groups with fifteen or more paying visitors pay ¥730/adult, ¥510/high-school pupil or ¥300/younger pupil. Eligible certificate holders receive free admission.
Temporary ticket office and steps from September
Demolition of the old rest house introduced a temporary ticket office in Fureai-kan and a different entry/exit route from September 2, 2026. The map shows about 250 metres from mine exit to parking, a fifteen-metre height difference and roughly seventy steps. Visitors unable to use steps, including wheelchair users, can be accommodated through the normal gate by speaking to staff on arrival.
New December closing days and Tsudo access
Normally open 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:15. New closing days begin December 3, 2026: Thursdays in December–February except public holidays, plus December 31–January 2. March–November normally closes on the second Thursday, switching to the fourth in August or when the second is a holiday. Walk about five minutes from Tsudo Station or drive about twenty-two minutes from Kiyotaki Interchange; parking is free. Cash, PayPay and d-Barai are accepted; pets cannot enter.
Other stops to combine within Nikko
Ashio links the mine trolley and tunnels, a confectioner near Tsudo Station and a valley hot-spring inn. Construction adds walking and steps between the mine entrance, exit and parking, so arrive with time before last admission. Coordinate bath reception, confectioner closures and trains or a prebooked guest transfer when combining the town with the mountain stay.
